No matter whether you’re a digital nomad or a digital native, there are certain things we should all be cognizant of to improve our online digital footprint.

We’ll start off with a no-brainer!

1. Limit what you share on social media.

This one is an obvious one, but sometimes it is a little too easy to share things that could put us at risk. For example, if your passwords aren’t secure (see our blog post on 3 Steps to Making Your Passwords More Secure) and you’re responding to one of those Facebook Q&A games and answering questions about “your first elementary school”, “your first best friend”, “your first pet’s name”, you’re actively working against yourself!

2. Don’t enter personal data on public Wi-Fi.

We must admit that we love a good public Wi-Fi network as much as the next person! This one may not be as glaringly obvious as #1, but public Wi-Fi networks are notoriously easy to hack. Err on the side of caution and refrain from entering personal data on public Wi-Fi networks.

3. Always update your software.

Stop hitting the “remind me later” button! It’s a best practice to update your software, even if it takes a few minutes of your time that you don’t think you have! Don’t leave your software vulnerable.

4. Reduce your digital footprint by deleting old accounts.

Unsubscribe to the websites, newsletters, and listservs that you don’t need. Delete accounts that you don’t use anymore. Reducing your digital footprint helps protect you from future data breaches. If you don’t use it, lose it.

5. Use digital tools to manage your digital footprint

Use digital tools to manage and protect your digital footprint. There are plenty of browser extensions and add-ons that help limit the capture of PII. VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) are also an option, as are website opt-outs.

Thrivacy is a digital tool that allows you to take control and own your ID. It’s fast and simple to have a secure and safe digital wallet that allows you to safeguard and share what you want, when you want. You’ll be able to:
